Harley-Davidson SuperLow Drivetrain
At 30-years old, some may call the Evolution Sportster on the SuperLow an “old” engine, and be that as it may, it’s also a proven one, and a design that Harley has been perfecting since the mid ’80s. The air-cooled mill runs the typical, 45-degree V-Twin configuration with a cast-in, five-speed transmission case integral with the engine cases. Power flows through the standard wet clutch, and a belt final drive carries the power to the pavement.
The undersquare bore and stroke measure out at 76.2 mm and 96.8 mm, respectively, and this layout delivers the kind of grunt we expect from a long-stroke engine with a total of 53.8 pound-feet of grunt at 3,750 rpm. An electronic, sequential-port fuel-injection system manages to wring 51 mpg out of the mill, but the SuperLow comes minus any sort of variable power delivery and now you can’t even get a Super Tuner so expect this vanilla engine management system to remain adequate, if a bit bland.
Typical of the breed, a one-lobe cam actuates each of the external pushrods to time the two-valve heads, and the compression ratio is fairly mild at only 9-to-1 so you can get away with mid-grade fuel. All-in-all, a simple, reliable engine that produces enough power to make the bike fun for experienced riders but not so much as to make it unfriendly to new riders.

It was the first model that supported a hand clutch. The design of these models was different from Harley’s other motorcycles. The foot brake lever was on the left and gear-shifters on the ride side.
Although it had all the looks of a sports motorcycle still it lacked in speed and horsepower. Moreover, at that time the cruiser bikes offered more speed and horsepower than these bikes, that’s why the Harley fans wanted something extra.
Later in 1954, the K model motorcycles were re-introduced under the name KH. The horsepower of these bikes was increased due to the new 55 ci engine and some internal modifications.
Moving onto 1956, when the company reintroduced the KHK model. The engine was upgraded and this was the last year for all the K model series as in the future the Sportster XL series took their place.
The first Harley XL was introduced to people in 1957. The XL model didn’t have any major similarities with the previous models of Harley. Although, the frame was a little similar to the K-model motorcycles.
Harley XL became a popular bike for street racing back in the 1950s. It produced a torque of 40 at 5,500 rpm so the street racers loved it.
Until 1985, these bikes came with the ironhead engine, and finally, in 1986 these engines were replaced by the latest Evolution engine.
Some people started to say that the Sportster bikes are specially made for beginners and women. So, Harley took this as an opportunity and released Sportster 882 with a much smaller size and weight to attract beginners.
The distance from the
seat to the ground was less which gave these bikes a similar look and feel like the Harley Low Riders .
In 1996, the custom Sportster was released that featured a new engine. And, the chain drive on Sportster was also replaced by a belt drive system.
In the year 2004, a significant improvement that was made in the Sportster model was that it featured a new rubber-mounted engine. The chassis was stiffer than before and the engine vibrations were also smoothed.
Three years later, a fuel injection system was introduced in all Sportster bikes and the carburetor was ditched.
In 2015, Harley released custom-styled Sportsters. This production line includes the Superlow 883, XL1200v, and the Iron 883.
The Sportster line is still in production and here we will be having a detailed look at the SuperLow Harley 883.
1.1 What Does XL Mean For Harley Sportster Series
The XL model designation was given to all Harley’s motorcycles in the sports line. As these bikes were smaller and lighter as compared to other Harley-Davidson motorcycles so by XL the company meant ‘Extra Light’.
Although these bikes are heavier than the majority of other motorcycles in the market, they are still lighter than Harley’s other production lines.
1.2 In What Way The Sportster 883 and 1200 Different?
The Sportster 883 gets its name from its 883cc engine that produces a maximum torque of 3500nm.
Whereas the Sportster 1200 features a 1200cc engine and torque of 4250 nm. This is the only major difference between both models.

2.1 Which is better, to buy a Harley 883 SuperLow or iron 883?
Both of these bikes are from the Sportster line and have the same 883cc engine. But, the ride and feel of both the bikes are very different.
The iron 883 is easier to handle but the SuperLow gives you a vibe of riding a bigger cruiser bike because of its seat that is much lower than the iron 883.
But if you fall for sporty looks and want to make a strong street presence then the Iron 883 stands out from SuperLow. Both bikes can be easily customized. However, the SuperLow offers a better riding experience.
So, what’s a better choice in both these bikes comes down to whatever satisfies your needs and taste in bikes.
2.2 Is The Sportster SuperLow a Comfortable Bike To Ride?

Veteran riders would say that the SuperLow is a poor choice for touring as it literally has no features of a touring bike such as windshield,

We would say that if you own a SuperLow then you can use it for tours by installing a windshield, high-quality saddlebags, and making some other necessary modifications.
But, if you are thinking of buying a
Sportster SuperLow especially to go on long tours then it would definitely be a bad choice.
2.4 What Makes The Sportster SuperLow a Good Choice For Beginners and Female Riders?
The SuperLow features a smaller engine than other Harleys engine families. But, it delivers the right torque, speed, and rev to satisfy your soul.
The SuperLow offers a low center of gravity that improves maneuverability. Women also have a shorter inseam on average as compared to men.
But, as the
seat of the bike has less height of about 25 inches and suitable width, it helps women to maintain good control on the bike.
The leaned handlebars, footpegs, and suspensions are designed to offer maximum control and comfort to beginners and female riders.

ОСОБОЕ МНЕНИЕ. Для меня, на тот момент плотно юзавшего Nightster, важнейшим моментом было: насколько меньше и хуже «883», нежели «1200»? Оказалось — сильно меньше. Динамика хорошего максискутера (или одноствольного кроссовета типа «полу-Гуся» — кому что ближе), не более того, а максималка — 160–165. А «Найт» и на 180 приборных катил вполне бодро. Вот только на «1200-й» максималке тебя пробирало от ужаса, а здесь моторчик совершенно адекватен шасси. Ну, может быть, кроме тормозов, да и то претензии к ним скорее по части «прозрачности», нежели динамики замедления. Отлично сбалансированный мотоцикл! Огорчило лишь, что усилие на рычаге сцепления столь же велико…
И не чоппер он, совсем не чоппер! Если у «1200-го» движок радовал о, неплохой на «середине» — и беспомощно обвисал «сверху», то здесь все ровненько — как на классиках европейской школы или приснопамятном «88-м твин-кэме». Да, со сброшенным газом не тронешься (но это нереально и на «1200-м»), а передачки приходится щелкать чуть чаще. Но — чуть, ввиду более широкого рабочего диапазона мотора.
Еще два отличия от XL1200 N — литые колеса и более низкий руль. К первому я отнесся нейтрально (они здесь вполне уместны, тем более, что дизайн их исконно спортстеровский), а вот руль порадовал. На «Найте» он был безбожно завышен, а здесь эргономика — то, что доктор прописал. В результате, в течение трех недель, что Iron был в редакции, я им пользовался чаще, чем длиттестовым Nightster.
Характерный «внеклассовый» силуэт, олдскульные ощущения на ходу («аэропланный» звук и характерные пульсации мотора, оружейное лязгание переключалки и т.д.) — это Sportster, настоящий Sportster. Рекомендую, настоятельно рекомендую. Вопрос лишь — в качестве чего? Если брать как мотоцикл «на все случаи» — пожалуй, все же нет. Короткоходная подвеска и не самая выдающаяся динамика ограничивают его использование городом-пригородом либо в качестве любимой игрушки для вечерних прогулок НЕмотоциклиста (хотя последний вариант, как показывает практика, среди соотечественников не теряет своей популярности). Я, скорее, вижу в «883» утилитарно-городское дополнение к большому дальнобойному мотоциклу (и необязательно «электричке»).
Только не покупайте его своей девушке — не бабская это тема! Тугая «сцепа», грубые манеры… Лучше доплатите за мягкий, более легкий в управлении и пышащий позитивом Dyna.

Узнать Sportster на улице проще всего по закрепленному на руле круглому спидометру, маслобойку справа под седлом и выставленным напоказ двум задним аммортизаторам. И, пожалуйста, никогда не говорите, что Sportster – чоппер (с этим термином вообще следует быть осторожным) или круизер! Это просто компактный классический мотоцикл, эдакий «входной билет» в мир Harley-Davidson. Самый, повторюсь, скромный и доступный, но при этом, отнюдь не самый неинтересный! Правда, в нашей стране, где многое поставлено с ног на голову и понты, порой, играют главную роль, Спортстеры считаются не особо престижными мотоциклами и их владельцев, говорят, даже не принимают в некоторые мотоклубы.
Двигатель Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider
В движении Харлей Дэвидсон Лав Райдер приводится 2-х цилиндровым V-образным мотором, объем которого составляет почти 1.7 л, с воздушным охлаждением. Вибрации мотора сводятся к минимальным благодаря «подушкам» из резины, с помощью них двигатель крепится к раме мотоцикла. Мотор мотоцикла имеет практически ровный цикл мощности во всех интервалах оборотов.
Наибольший крутящий момент при 3500 об/минуту, 126 н/м. Мотор 4-х тактный, восьми клапанный, с эл. структурой последовательного впрыска горючего. Предельная скорость байка – немного более 200 км/час. Коробка скоростей работает просто отменно.
Также в мотоцикле Harley-Davidson Dyna Low Rider конструкторы доработали подвеску – амортизаторы сзади сейчас имеют иную конструкцию, они мягкие и практичные. Ходовой запас вилки спереди – 130 миллиметров – хороший показатель. В заключение можно сказать, что подвеска байка сконструирована просто прекрасно.
Тормозная система Харлей Дэвидсон Лав Райдер довольно примечательная. Мотоцикл имеет 2 30 см плавающих дисков тормозов на колесе спереди и 29.2 см диск на колесе сзади. Кроме всего, функционально в оснащение входит ABS. Тормоза спереди – 2 плавающих диска с четырех поршневыми суппортами, тормоза сзади – 1 диск с двух поршневым плавающим суппортом.
